Surprising

03.16-03.23.22

As CoolCleveland approaches our twentieth year, this region continues to surprise and delight us. The Screw Factory in Lakewood is hosting March Maker Madness. The Ohio Innocence Project collaborates with Cleveland artist Judy Takács on an innovative event. And jazz pianist par excellence Jackie Warren celebrates her own birthday at BOP STOP.The Cleveland Dragon Boat Association season kicks off already (for pre-season conditioning workouts only), the JazzFest has just announced this year’s lineup (they are still on the hunt for local acts), and one of Biden’s climate policy advisors, (who hails from Cleveland), is speaking this week.

In this week’s commentary by CoolCleveland’s Anastasia Pantsios, we were surprised and dismayed to hear that Akron Roundtable was offering a platform for a known perpetuator of voter fraud conspiracy theories. Freedom of speech is one thing, but there’s no reason to amplify outright lies. No surprise there.

Fair Elections Opponent Offered Platform for Lies

Hans von Spakovsky, a fellow at the rightwing Heritage Foundation, specializes in spreading lies about the ubiquity of voter fraud & its threat to the integrity of U.S. elections. Despite the near-nonexistence of such fraud, von Spakovsky has parlayed his claims into a career advocating for onerous voter suppression measures that prevent many eligible Americans from voting. This week, the Akron Roundtable, which says it brings “bold, creative and new ideas to the region,” gives von Spakovsky a forum to present his stale, debunked, anti-democratic, racist ideas unchallenged. Read the commentary by Anastasia Pantsios here
