Cleveland artist Judy Takács’ sharp, powerful, realistic paintings are well known to area gallery and museum visitors, having been widely exhibited in the area. She takes ordinary women of all types and turns them into heroes in her work.
Now she’s created a series called The Goddess Project: Paintings and Stories, both an exhibit of the actual paintings, now on view at Chagrin Arts, and a book featuring 55 full-color images. Instead of turning ordinary women into heroes, she takes goddesses and heroines from the classic mythology of various traditions and re-invents them as modern women from a contemporary feminist viewpoint. She portrays them not as idealized figures but as women of different races, ages and body types, who challenge patriarchy, fight for justice and stand in solidarity with other women.
For several years, Chagrin Arts has been involved with the Ohio Innocence Project, which works to free people who have been wrongly incarcerated. So on Sunday March 20, it all comes together Pierce Reed, Director of Policy and Engagement at the Ohio Innocence Project, will lead a discussion featuring Takács and three women whose lives have been impacted by the Innocence Project’s work. After the program at Chagrin Falls Town Hall, attendees can go across the street to Chagrin Arts and have some refreshments. It’s free (donations will be accepted for the Innocence Project), but reservations are requested. Go to chagrinarts.org or call 440-247-9700.
