Two noted Cleveland artists will be in the spotlight when moCa Cleveland hosts a reception to celebrate its new exhibitions.
Experimental filmmaker Robert Banks and painter/collagist Dexter Davis are both well known in the local arts community from their many exhibitions and screenings. The two have been friends and collaborators for decades, and Banks feels that, despite the many shows he’s been featured in, Davis hasn’t gotten his due attention. So he’s conceived another collaborative project, this time involving high school students from Cleveland’s NewBridge Center for Arts and Technology, where he currently teaches, and Cleveland Institute of Art photography students.
Part of moCa’s fourth-floor gallery has become a working studio for Davis and Banks, where Davis is creating some of the work he’ll show in this summer’s FRONT International Triennial while Banks and the students are filming Davis, interviewing him and people who know him, and creating a documentary from the materials they assemble. The final product will be screened in moCa’s Cohen Gallery along with a selection of recent works by Davis.
Also debuting this Friday is Bloodline by Atlanta-based mixed-media artist Honey Pierre, featuring woven portraits of influential women in her life, along with a site-specific mural installation. The reception is free and open to all.
