Acerbic

The edge has returned. It’s time to take off the gloves and look ourselves straight in the eyes. If we do, here’s some of what we might see:

The role of oil in the Persian gulf will be examined as the Happy Dog Takes on the World. Kent musicians remember artist Halim El-Dahb on his 4,098th birthday. The acerbic artist collective challenges the comfortable at Brews + Prose. The Beachland celebrates their 19th birthday: their last as a teenager, it seems.

The Rock Hall hosts a panel on opportunities in the local black music business. Joyce DiDonato blends opera, jazz, pop and tango at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel. The Noise Lunch at Now That’s Class gets Lost in Time and Space. The Cleveland Democratic Socialists of America point out how white nationalism has functioned here in Cleveland and how we can successfully combat it. Time to reclaim the cutting edge. –Thomas Mulready

We’re about a month away from the start of the regular baseball season. And we have a special guest in Marty Gitlin, a local author who has recently finished a book about the Cleveland Indians called The Ultimate Cleveland Indians Time Machine which is available from his website from March 1st and then from retailers on April 1st. Gitlin joins us to talk about the unusual events he details in the book about the Indian’s history from its inception in the late 1800s to the demise of the offensive Chief Wahoo.

And we have new music from Cleveland’s Window Dogs and Jivviden.

Michael Suglio, who created the Short.Sweet.Film.Fest, taking place at the Alex Theatre at the 9 this weekend, wants to dispel the idea that a funny clip of a cat playing in the snow is a short film. “All good short films have your basic story of a beginning, middle and end. They’re just short-form stories, no different than features.”

What he’s really excited about is that the festival has reached a long-time goal: of the 118 short films screening over three days, half are by Cleveland-area filmmakers. “When we started eight years ago there wasn’t as a vibrant of a film community as there is now,” he says.”We were part of fostering that.” Fri 3/1-Sun 3/3.

One of Cleveland’s newer festivals, the seven-year-old Kurentovanje is also one of the most fun. It’s based on a Slovenian festival in which furry costumed “kurents” try to chase away winter with their clanging bells. And while Slovenian food, traditions & culture are at the heart of this celebration, which takes place in and around the National Slovenian Home on St. Clair, the family-friendly festival attracts a cross-section of Clevelanders.

It kicks off at noon with a short parade, featuring dancers, bands, and delegations from local businesses and organizations, before everyone troops into the Slovenian Home to enjoy a lots of food and drink, vendors, entertainment on several stages, bocce and a kids’ activity area. Sat 3/2.

He auditioned as pianist with the Spiders From Mars for Mick Ronson in New York in 1972, and earned the gig after sight reading “Changes” for seven seconds.
