Country singer George Jones, who died in 2013 at the age of 81, was a legend and a character. He emerged in the 1950s and remained a star the rest of his life, although the hits stopped coming in the early ’80s, after a string of well-known ’70s duets with his third wife, fellow country singer Tammy Wynette.
Drinking and drug use slowed him down and earned him the nickname of “No Show Jones” for all the shows he blew off (and later made good on when he got sober). But nothing could take away from signature tunes such as “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” “She Still Thinks I Care” and “Walk Through This World With Me,” or his influence on multiple generations of country, alt country, folk and Americana performers.
That’s why musician Charlie Wiener has gathered together a passel of other local musicians including Jake Briggs, Rachel Brown & the Beatnik Playboys, Ray Flanagan, Bob Frank, J Scott Franklin, Paul Kovac and Jon Mosey for George Jones Night at G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula. Each of the performers will do a couple of Jones tunes and one of their own in the spirit of Jones. Given the dozens of duets Jones recorded in his career, not only with Wynette, but with artists such as B.B. King, Keith Richards, Brenda Lee, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, the Staples Singers, Dolly Parton and Harry Connick Jr., expect collaborations.
