Opera Singer Joyce DiDonato Mixes Up Genres in “Songplay” at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel

Wed 2/27 @ 7:30PM

Joyce DiDonato is a noted opera singer, but that’s hardly ALL she does. The Kansas-born mezzo-soprano has sung classic operas by Mozart and Handel, bel canto works by Rossini and Donizetti, and contemporary opera as well and won two Grammy for her classical recordings. But her brand-new album Songplay, out this month, features musicians drawn from opera, jazz and tango, who created unique arrangements of tunes from Italian art songs to the Great American Songbook, finding common threads across the centuries.

She and her five-piece band — the same musicians she recorded the album with — are performing the Songplay show at only seven venues, including Finney Chapel in Oberlin. It features tunes by Duke Ellington, George Shearing, Edith Piaf, Jerry Bock, and Rodgers and Hart.

Tickets are $35, $30 for seniors, members of the military, and Oberlin alumni and staff; $10 for students.
