Hibernation

There’s no reason to hibernate. Except that it’s damn cold out, it’s been a long winter, and spring is right around the corner. How do we know? Because Mulberry Creek Herb Farm opens for the season this week. Ingenuity’s spring Ignite! series for artist-entrepreneurs also kicks off in about a week.

So for now, there’s plenty to do. Performance poets Michael Salinger and Sara Holbrook have teamed up with drummer/visual artist Scott Pickering on a new book, Dreaming Big and Small, and the launch event at Loganberry promises “great performances and random acts of art.” The Chef’s Garden in Huron is hosting a carrot/potato dinner. Guitarist Lucas Kadish returns to CLE from NYC as part of Tri-C’s “Flying Home” series. Rock Hall Nights explores fashion, and Art House serves chili in handmade ceramic bowls.

Dial up this week’s CoolCLE PODCAST featuring music from Akron’s Coup de Grace, while Irish accordianist John Whelan and Americana outfit Low Lily collaborate on an early St. Pat’s party at G.A.R. Hall. If you’re still hibernating, you’re going to miss it. –Thomas Mulready

CoolCLE PODCAST #23: Playhouse Square Spring Preview with WhyCLE’s Jen

Playhouse Square is an exciting and entertaining destination in our city. We�re joined by Cleveland blogger and board member of Playhouse Square Partners, Jen, to preview some of the cool things happening at Playhouse Square this Spring including Broadway Series, Flanagan�s Wake, Michelle Obama and School of Rock as well as the Disney Musicals in Schools program.

More Room = More Adoptions

The brand new Cleveland Kennel opens this week, and Becca Britton, director of the nonprofit Friends of the Cleveland Kennel, which promotes adoptions, couldn’t be more excited. “It’s hard to adopt animals out of the old kennel building because of the way it’s set up. There are no meet-and-greet rooms. It’s not very people-friendly.”

The old 40-year-old kennel is being replaced with an up-to-date 15,587 SQ facility with natural light, better ventilation and secure outdoor space. “We hope the opening of the new kennel leads to even more dogs getting adopted and more dogs getting out of the kennel,” Britton says. Mayor Jackson cuts the ribbon Thu 3/7 @ 11am. There’ll be tours Fri 3/8-Sun 3/10.

Old Cleveland Label Awakes From Hibernation

A little more than 41 years ago, an upstart label run out of a house in Willoughby Hills birthed what would prove to be one of the best-selling rock & roll albums of all time. Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell on the Cleveland International label eventually sold more than 40 million copies. The label was helmed by unforgettably passionate music mogul Steve Popovich, who ran the label through 1986 and revived it from 1995-2003.

It also left behind a huge mess of lawsuits when Popovich died in 2011. His son, Steve Jr, has finally sorted out his estate and re-launched the label to reissue the old music and sign new bands in the spirit his dad loved: heartland American music, and of course, polka. It all starts April 5 with the re-issue of the 1995 Cleveland Rocks compilation, featuring Meat Loaf, Southside Johnny, Ronnie Spector, Ian Hunter and more.

Words and Images Hand in Hand

Sara Holbrook and Michael Salinger are local educators, author and poets with backgrounds in performance poetry. Scott Pickering is an artist/musician known for his vibrant, irreverent cartoon-like drawings. The trio has hooked up to create a book for older kids called Dreaming Big and Small, and they’ll be hosting an all-ages event at Loganberry Books which, we’re told, will feature “great performances and random acts of art.” Thu 3/7.

* The much-traveled Talespinner Children’s Theatre heads for northern Africa where it touches down in Morocco for About a Ghoul a story about deceptive appearances and forging friendships. Sat 3/9-Sun 3/31.

* Ballet Excel Ohio, whose company includes dancers 8-18, presents Peter Pan at the Akron Civic Theatre “by children, for children.” Sat 3/9 & Sun 3/10.

* Starting this week and for all seven Fridays of Lent, Tremont’s Prosperity Social Club brings back its special fish fries for the 11th year, offering belly-filling comfort food to those who like the custom but aren’t giving up on indulging themselves. Fri 3/8-Fri 4/19.

Jennifer Haley’s The Nether, which has its Cleveland premiere at Dobama Theatre, looks at a near future when the Internet has become an immersive fantasy world, giving rise to some very dark fantasies. It opens with previews today and tomorrow and runs Fri 3/8-Sun 3/31.

* March edition of Rock Hall Nights focuses on rock & roll fashion.

* The Cleveland Democratic Socialists present a program which explores how to combat white nationalism.

What’s out there in our galaxy and others, trillions of miles away? CWRU’s Dr. Bill Janesh will talk about dwarf galaxies and the light they shed on the workings of the universe at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s “Frontiers of Astronomy” lecture series.

* Dueling astronomy programs! At the Lakewood Library, astronomer Dean Regas of the Cincinnati Observatory and co-host of PBS’s Star Gazers series, will talk about the moon and other bodies in the solar system.

Shirley Aley Campbell, who died last year at age 93, was one of the founders of Artists Archives of the Western Reserve. They’re honoring her with a pop-up show of her vivid portraits of ordinary and offbeat people, through Sat 3/16. There’ll also be a celebration of her life there Sun 3/10.

Pitcher Addy Joss, who played baseball for Cleveland teams from 1902-1910, had one of the lowest ERAs in baseball history and pitched a perfect game. He died young and was quickly forgotten. The documentary Addie Joss Revealed shows at the Baseball Heritage Museum with its writer/producer Matt Underwood on hand.

* The afternoon screening of CatVideoFest at the Cedar Lee sold out instantly. That’s why there’s now a morning screening, and another one Tue 3/12 @ 4pm.

* Four local performers share music and stories at “Songwriters in the Round” at Nighttown.

The touring cast of the Broadway musical School of Rock, with actors ranging from age 9 to adults, is making a stop at Nighttown to perform a special cabaret evening of jazz, rock, pop and musical theater classics to raise money for an AIDS-related charity.

* The Cleveland Cello Society hosts a concert with Cleveland Orchestra Principal Cellist Mark Kosower at Detroit-Shoreway’s Reinberger Auditorium.

Here’s how you know winter won’t last much longer: Mulberry Creek Herb Farm, the family-owned organic farm in Huron, opens for the season this week. It’ll be a while before you can start planting outside, but wouldn’t it be nice to get a couple of fragrant pots now to have in your kitchen? Starting today they’re open Tuesday-Saturday @ 10am-5pm.

Grow Up, Becky’s

Most nights I’m comfortably tucked in bed by 9pm with a good book or magazine. But every now and then I go out for a beer with an old or new friend in the evening, just as long as it’s somewhere near my home. And that nearby place for me is a dive bar off of Chester named “Becky’s”, which has been in the same location for decades….
