A Moon for the Misbegotten was playwright Eugene O’Neill’s last major work, written in the early 1940s, ten years before he died in 1953 and not staged until 1957. It’s a sequel to his 1942 play Long Day’s Journey Into Night (a VERY long play indeed!), which was also not staged until after his death. Both plays are semi-autobiographical and deal with the Tyrone family and their hardships and substance abuse.
In it the main character, Jamie Tyrone’s tenant Phil Hogan enlists his daughter Josie to get Tyrone drunk and seduce him to prevent the sale of his land. Recriminations follow. Like most of O’Neill’s work, it’s an intense evening of theater.
That never stops Ensemble Theatre, which loves plays that push emotional boundaries. They’ll be producing it in their MainStage Theater March 8-31, Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm and Sundays @ 2pm. Tickets are $12-$29.
