Tuesday Musical Program at EJ Thomas Hall Features Music By Three Interconnected Russian Composers

Tue 3/12 @ 7:30PM

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center returns to the Tuesday Musical series at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall for a program called “Russian Mastery.”

It features the music of four Russian composers whose lives intersected. It centers on the Piano Quintet by Alexander Taneyev, an obscure Russian composer of the late 19th and early 20th century who was a member of the aristocracy and close to the tsar’s family.

Taneyev was a student of Tchaikovsky’s and a mentor to Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff, so their music rounds out the concert with Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir d’un lieu cher for Violin and Piano, Prokofiev’s Sonata in C major for Two Violins, and Rachmaninoff’s Trio élégiaque in G minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello.

Pianist Wu Han leads the ensemble coming to Akron, which also includes violinists Arnaud Sussmann and Alexander Sitkovetsky, violist Matthew Lipman and cellist Nicholas Canellakis.

Tickets are $25-$45, free for all students.
