 ARTS

Create and Discover Beauty at
the Fine Arts Association

Fine Arts Association is one of those rare organizations that brings together all the arts, all the time.

“We are committed to having all the arts under one roof. We are the place to come to create and discover beauty. We are a jewel in the crown that is Lake County,” insists David Malinowski, the Roger and Anne Clapp Chair of Performing Arts at FAA, when CoolCleveland caught up with him in the middle of rehearsals for the world premiere of Alice In Danceland, which he directs and co-wrote.

Whether it’s theater, dance, visual arts, creative arts therapies, a year-round concert season, or ongoing educational programs, Fine Arts Association literally offers something for everyone.  Read more.

Otters Multiply at CMNH

We were so sad when one of the river otters at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Perkins Wildlife Center passed away a few months ago. But there’s happy news now: a new pair has arrived to join CMNH’s two other otters.  Read more

Ensemble Theater has, like most of its peers, been all virtual for the last two years. It also vacated its home at the Coventry PEACE campus. Now it has a new home: Notre Dame College, where executive artistic director Celeste Cosentino will be on the faculty.   Read more

 PRIDE

Pride in the CLE:
More Than a March

Pride in the CLE attracted over 30,000 attendees to the last march and festival in 2019, and this year’s celebration on Sat 06.04 moves to the historic Malls B & C for even more community engagement. Plus, there’s a variety of nighttime events located in neighborhoods and indoor venues throughout the city.

But it’s more than just a parade. Following the kick-off march, the event turns into a bustling all-day festival featuring a diverse array of vendors — areas of interest include healthcare, activism, social groups and nonprofits — as well as a robust slate of music, entertainment and DJs. And don’t forget to stick around for the afterparties!  Read more.

 VISUAL ART

Honoring the Outsider

The Rev. Albert Wagner was cranking out his idiosyncratic art work in obscurity in East Cleveland until he was discovered by local art mavens and the art press in the 1990s. He garnered national press and a number of shows prior to his 2006 death.

After that there was talk on and off about creating a museum for his work, either at his former home or another location. That long-stalled project is on the verge of becoming reality. Learn more about the artist and the project at a free screening of a 2008 film about his life at the Beachland Ballroom Thu 6/3.  Read more

 COMMENTARY

Gov. DeWIne Says YES
to More Gun Violence

Ten dead in a Buffalo supermarket. 21 dead at a Texas elementary school. All in a little more than a week. So the timing couldn’t be more awful for a new Ohio law to take effect next week that eliminates training, licensing and background checks for concealed carry, putting guns in the hands of just about anyone.

Governor Mike DeWine meekly signed the bill without comment in March, once again acquiescing to the gerrymandered GOP supermajority in the legislature. That’s just one more reason he needs to lose his job to Democrat Nan Whaley in November. Read more
