CityMusic Cleveland winds down its “Justice, Equality, Hope” season with a pair of performances that it says will be “expressing aspects of peace, from the luminous affect of Mozart to the struggles for equal recognition of Luisa Adolpha Le Beau to the expression of spiritual principles by Dawn Avery.”
German composer Luisa Adolpha Le Beau (1850-1927) devoted her life to music from the age of 5, but she was born in an era when women musicians were all considered dilettantes. But her Quintet in C Minor, Op. 54, one of her large body of works, shows that she was a well-trained and skilled composer.
CityMusic is also performing the version of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major that was re-arranged for a string quintet by German composer Ignaz Lachner, who assigned the various orchestral parts to the strings.
Finally, the ensemble will perform the world premiere of contemporary Native-American composer Dawn Avery’s commissioned work “Peace,” which features melodies, spoken words and staging to reflect her Mohawk worldview and the four spiritual principles of peace, as well as a diverse heritages of the Pantheon Ensemble, which will be performing the concert.
The Pantheon Ensemble features violinists Masha Andreini and Mari Sato; violist Yael Senamaud-Cohen; cellist Nataliya Pshenycha; bassist Tracy Rowell; and pianist Elizabeth DeMio.
The ensemble will perform on Thursday June 2 at The Temple-Tifereth Israel and on Friday June 3 at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village. As always, CityMusic Cleveland concerts are free and open to all.
