Pianist/composer Gerald Clayton was destined for a career in music: his father is the great jazz bassist John Clayton. He made the most of whatever talent he inherited, studying at both USC’s Thornton School of Music and with jazz piano legend Kenny Barron at the Manhattan School of Music.

Now 38, Clayton has released half a dozen albums as a band leader, played on albums for numerous other artists including Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Teri Lyne Carrington and Charles Lloyd, and been nominated for six Grammys. In 2018, Cleveland was one of a handful of cities where he performed a multimedia presentation based on his Piedmont Blues: A Search for Salvation, a study of the African-American culture of the North Carolina.

Now he’s back to spend two evenings at the BOP STOP with “Conversations on Improvisation,” a program that explores how a pianist improvises on classic tunes and how audiences can decipher what’s going on. It’s presented by Piano Cleveland.

Tickets are $25 for adults; $10 student tickets are available by calling Piano Cleveland at 216-707-5397.
