Cleveland Pops Orchestra Performs Its Annual Salute to the Armed Forces

Fri 6/3 @ 8PM

It’s an annual event for the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, its Salute to the Armed Forces, now in its 20th year.

Whether you’re a big fan of the fighting forces or just want to get a little patriotic high, you can join the ensemble, led by clarinetist Carl Topilow, and the Cleveland Pops Chorus, for an evening at Severance Hall to celebrate all things American.

You’ll hear classic tunes like “America the Beautiful” and “America,” the oft-recorded “Let Freedom Ring,” George and Ira Gershwin’s high-energy rah-rah song “Strike Up the Band” that’s not specifically patriotic, and Lee Greenwood’s 1984 hit “God Bless the USA,” which is, and which many find a little over-the-top, especially since its adoption as an anthem for far-right jingoists. It will also include, we’re told, “stirring military-inspired music and patriotic sing-alongs.”
