Think. And act.
Over the 20-year history of CoolCleveland, we’ve had a chance to think about things from many angles. But we’ve learned not to think too hard and too long before acting. The one thing the pandemic has taught us is don’t take anything for granted. There’s plenty of good news: CMNH has just lowered its prices dramatically, making it easier to visit than ever before. The Grog Shop also slashes their price – to free – but just for this weekend. The Bainbridge Swing Dances are starting up again.

And now is the time to act: The Food Bank’s CEO speaks at the City Club about the ongoing need, indoor farmers markets start up this week for the winter season, and the full moon is out, so take advantage of a nighttime walk in the CVNP.

If you want it, come and get it. Join us at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron this Sun 1/8 with their delicious 100% gluten-free kitchen, personalized service, stellar sound system and unobstructed sight lines as we celebrate David Bowie’s birthday with live music, and contemplate how he nurtured his own mental health. Don’t think too hard about it. Make your move.

 BRUNCH

David Bowie Birthday Brunch

Jilly’s Music Room in Akron is known amongst area musicians for brilliant sound and excellent sight lines. And their kitchen is legendary for their 100% gluten-free menu, locally sourced and made fresh to order. Their highly trained wait staff meets you at the door and leads you to your seat. Vanity Crash has worked up some new material in advance of their sixth release, plus a nice selection of hits and deep cuts, including a handful from Aladdin Sane, seeing as how we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of its release.

But if you’re hankering for a Bowie Brunch, this will be your only opportunity is this coming Sun 1/8 at 11:30AM at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron, celebrating the artist’s birthday. If you’d rather stay up late, the other two shows, in Cleveland Heights (Fri 1/13) and Cleveland (Sat 1/14), are evening performances. So order up your tickets, and add the brunch, and bring a close friend or two to help blow out the candles!  Read more.

 ART & NATURE

Cleveland Museum of Natural History Exhibits Andy Warhol’s Endangered Species

In 1983, ten years after the Endangered Species Act was signed into law, Andy Warhol created an iconic series of screenprints to draw public attention to their plight. He created portraits of 10 animals in peril, and these are one of only 150 sets created by Warhol.

Now you can see these screenprints in CMNH’s newly reopened Corning Gallery, which will be home for rotating exhibits that highlight the intersection of art and nature, included with your general admission.  Read more.

 DEMOCRACY

Slaying the Gerrymandering Dragon

Until it passed redistricting reform, Michigan was in the same bind as Ohio: lopsided congressional and legislative districts that gave Republicans outsized power. Voters overwhelmingly approved an independent redistricting panel in 2018, removing politicians from the process. The more balanced results have been striking.

A new full-length documentary Slay the Dragon looks at how Michigan succeeded where Ohio has failed. It’s a blueprint for fighting back against democracy-hating politicians such as Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose who’s trying to block such a ballot issue from succeeding in Ohio. Indivisible Strongsville is hosting several screenings & there’ll likely be more in the near future. Read more.
