Grog Shop Showcases Area’s Diverse Music Scene in Free Weekend Concerts

Thu 1/5-Sun 1/8

It’s become an annual tradition at the Grog Shop. Each year during the slow first week of January, it devotes a long weekend to showcasing local talent in a series of four evenings of free music.

It kicks off on Thursday with a night headlined by soul-influenced theatrical rockers Apostle Jones, fronted by high-energy vocalist Mikey Silas. The buzz around the band has grown in the last 3-4 years and they’re definitely worth checking out. Rickers Plinko and Switched On share the stage.

On Friday, the lineup is Xanny Stars, Big Pop, Orefice Rex and Mr. Princess. Saturday you can hear the dark heavy music of Axioma, Osi & the Jupiter’s “forest folk,” and Blind Spring, with a quartet of veterans of the indie/underground scene — David Cintron, Chris Smith, Clifford Meyer and Scott Pickering.

The weekend wraps up on Sunday with a hip hop-oriented evening featuring long-time hip-hop duo Play Havoc, Go Live Grizzies, Mr. 44, Peerless! and Gamechangers.

All shows start at 8pm except Sunday, which starts at 8:30.
