It may be getting toward the end of summer, but northeast Ohio still has a couple of county fairs left. The action shifts west to Lorain County this week where the 180th annual Lorain County Fair opens in the fairgrounds in Wellington on Monday August 24.
If you’re a county fair regular, you know what to expect: guilty-pleasure food, rides that could make you throw it up if you don’t have a strong stomach. Barns filled with animals, displays of things such as very large pumpkins. Lots of cover bands. (Popular Johnny Cash impersonator Terry Lee Goffee plays from 4-6pm Friday — if you’re a Cash fan, don’t miss his accurate, excellent renditions of tunes by the legendary Man in Black.)
And of course there’s action in the grandstand — harness racing, a truck pull, a tractor pull, a concert with country artists Sawyer Brown on Tuesday at 8pm, and the eagerly anticipated Demolition Derby on Sunday August 30 at 4pm.
In fact, this fair actually starts low-key on Sunday August 23, with a free day of harness racing, a flag raising ceremony at 5pm, and the judging of various arts and crafts. Gates open at 8am on Monday for the main event, and at 8am each day after that for one of the longest county fairs in the region.
