Stronger

06.19-26.24

Tougher than the rest

Who else has this? Our region is so inherently beautiful and authentic, we run the risk of taking it for granted. Well, not on our watch.Imagine a zip line that not only flies over the treetop canopy (like most others), but also swings you out over one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world? Or an out gay politician who’s found a way to collaborate with both sides of the aisle (see our VIDEO) and has risen to minority leader in a state like Ohio? Or the lower level of the iconic Detroit Superior Bridge, exploding once again for a weekend with sound and light and music and art?

Celebrate our strong rock & roll history at BOP STOP this Sat 6/22 as we present Our Day Will Come, honoring women rockers from our region with interviews and live performances by eight local women-led bands. That’s how you stay strong.

 MUSIC

We’re so proud of our women rock pioneers in this region, such as Tracy Chapman, Rachel Sweet, and the inimitable Chrissie Hynde.

But did you know that the Poni-Tails formed while students at Brush High School in Lyndhurst and hit #7 with Born Too Late? Or that the Secrets met at Shaw High School before they were signed to the Philips West Coast label and went to #18 with The Boy Next Door? And Akron’s Ruby & the Romantics took it all way to #1 with their song, Our Day Will Come, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock and Roll Recording and covered by Amy Winehouse, among dozens of others.

Join eight local women-led bands at the BOP STOP this Sat 6/22 as we celebrate our NEO rock & roll heritage: Xanny Stars, LoConti, TRUSS, Super Babes, Moon Echo Garden, Jinni Fontana, Ali Garrigan and Patty No! Plus exclusive interviews with local heroes like Cindy Barber, Eliiott Carter, Sue Schmidt, Anastasia Pantsios, Billy Bass and more, all hosted by Thomas Mulready and Vanity Crash. Read more.

State Senator Nickie Antonio Makes History and Makes Friends

Nickie Antonio made history when she was elected the first openly gay legislator in the state of Ohio, and again when she became the first out gay minority leader in the history of the state.

CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready caught up with State Senator Antonio at a birthday party and fundraiser to discuss the issues that matter to her and her constituents: fair elections, reproductive health care, and an end to the death penalty, and staying vigilant against an increasingly radical state legislature majority.  OUTDOORS

Heights make me queasy. It’s hard for me to look over my third-floor balcony. I once rode a merry-go-round at Cedar Point 25 times while my friends waited to get on some roller coaster I didn’t even want to walk past.

But since 2016, there’s been something to do in Geneva-on-the-Lake for those who need more excitement than miniature golf and arcade games can offer. Lake Erie Canopy Tours offers the chance to fly over treetops and water and enjoy a panoramic view of the Lake Erie shore — provided heights don’t make you queasy — or even if they do. So I did. And the views ARE spectacular. There’s even a nighttime tour on Saturdays for really daring people! Read more.
