Trombone Shorty Brings the Distinctive Sound of New Orleans to Cain Park

Thu 6/20 @ 8PM

If you’ve ever been to New Orleans, you know music is in the air, in the culture, on the streets. It’s for young and old, and it’s something kids aspire to. Certainly that was the case for 38-year-old Trombone Shorty, officially known as Troy Andrews. Like many New Orleans musicians he grew up in a family and neighborhood where he was surrounded by musicians, and he started playing trombone before he even hit kindergarten and was performing by the time he was six, participating in NOLA’s unique second-line parades.. Hence his nickname.

Now with more than a dozen albums under his belt as a bandleader, and many more as a sideman, he’s one of the young elders of the city’s music scene. And his music is drenched in the sounds of that city, rolling funk, R&B, jazz, blues and pop into a vibrant ball of sound that he’s toured around the world. When youj listen to musicians such as Trombone Shorty, you’ll realize that the reason New Orleans is called “The City that Care Forgot,” despite its many challenges is, because of its music.

He’ll be rolling it into Cain Park’s Alma Amphitheater this week, with Atlanta rapper Big Boi of Outkast opening. Get tickets here.
