Following the pandemic, many festivals and special events took a break of a couple of years. But some took breaks so long, we despaired of their ever coming back. Luckily, that wasn’t the case with Vegfest which takes place this weekend for the first time in five years.
Sponsored by the Cleveland Vegan Society, the event, which returns to the Huntington Convention Center, offers a dizzying array of plant-based food choices in its vegan food court, including Indian and Middle Eastern food, pizza, bagels and chocolate; a marketplace of vendors and organizations devoted to cruelty-free, health-related and environmentally friendly causes; cooking demonstrations; local and national speakers; a film screening; and kids’ area.
You’ll be able to talk to government agencies and departments such as the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District and the Cuyahoga County Department of Sustainability, support animal rescues and sanctuaries, and register to vote (or change your address) at the county board of elections booth to help vote out politicians who repealed Ohio’s green energy standards and voted to make Ohio electric ratepayers pay to bail out a bankrupt coal processing plant — in Indiana. And you’ll probably run in dedicated vegan Dennis Kucinich, who is currently running for Congress as an independent in Ohio district 7, which includes some of southwestern Cuyahoga County.
Admission is free although there’s a $5 suggested donation going toward the Cleveland Vegan Society’s work. You can also pay $20 for a VIP early entry from 10-11am (good to avoid the lines at the food booths) which includes a swag bag.
