On June 24, 2022 the world changed for women in the U.S. After decades of head-in-the-sand assurances that “Oh, they’ll never overturn Roe v. Wade — it’s too good a fundraiser for the right,” they did, ending nearly 50 years of reproductive choice for women.
In the Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court gave right wingers carte blanche to pretend they believe fetuses are “babies” or “pre-born human beings” (they’ve repeatedly shown that they don’t really believe this) and ban or severely limit abortion, to the detriment of women’s health or even lives. And while the court tried to excuse its decision by saying it should be up to the states to set limits — which has caused chaos across the country — the anti-choice movement, working heavily against public opinion, is already plotting a national abortion ban, should Trump be re-elected and Republicans assume control of both houses of Congress.
The pushback against the decision has been nationwide, in both blue states and red states, with voters placing issues on the ballot protecting the right of women to control their own bodies and every one passing, including in Ohio last November when 57% of the voters told the Ohio legislature to back off on the bans.
Speakers include some of our best local champions for women’s rights including Ohio Senate Minority leader Nickie Antonio, Ohio state representative Juanita Brent and Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Meredith Turner, as well as Dr Lauren Beene of Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights, which spearheaded last year’s ballot issue victory and Cuyahoga County Democratic Party Chair Dave Brock. Come down, bring a sign — anyone who stands up for women’s rights is welcome.
