04.06-04.13.22

There’s a lot to be excited about.
Area nonprofits are mounting more shows than they have in more than two years. Audiences are starting to come out of hibernation, though not in the same numbers as before. Normal? No one knows what that is anymore. But we’re all gushy and emotional seeing people out and about, buying tickets and socializing. We’re thrilled with all that’s going on. And not just because spring is around the corner. There’s a panel discussion on the history of drag in Cleveland. Local musicians come together to benefit Ukraine. An art show expresses the decline in bee population. Cleveland’s first new mayor in a decade and a half offers his State of the City. And CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen Connally tells us why a Black Republican is an oxymoron. Let’s not get too excited.

 ELECTIONS

Primary Voting Starts Amidst Confusion

If you heard multiple conflicting stories about whether or not there’d be a primary election on May 3 and whether there might be two primaries (yes — at some undetermined time) well, condolences. We understand and sympathize. There is a primary (the first one) on May 3 and early voting has already started. Please vote! But legislative races won’t be on the ballot. Thanks to Republican determination to rig the maps to hang onto their outsized power, we’ve bumped against the deadline for legislative maps — with no maps. Read More

 C. ELLEN CONNALLY

A Black Republican Is An Oxymoron

Being Black and Republican is like being a Jewish Nazi. You can be expelled from a political party or an organization. Unfortunately, you cannot be expelled from your racial heritage. If I could vote to expel anyone from being Black, I’d nominate Byron Donalds for expulsion, just after I nominated Justice Clarence Thomas.   But Donalds is a party man. He has to tote that barge and lift that bale. If he gets a little drunk with ideas of thinking on own, he’ll land in Republican jail… Read the COMMENTARY from C. Ellen Connally here!
