We raise our eyes to the silver screen as new director Bilgesu Sisman takes over from John Ewing after almost 40 years and she screens one of her favorite films and takes questions. We cast our eyes to nature’s wonders and back down to a couple of brand new guide books on Lake Erie and our own National Park.We gaze upon the glory of our area drag queens with the first of a series of exclusive CoolCleveland video interviews, starting this week with Monica Mod. We cry hallelujah as the City of Cleveland contemplates protected bikeways on both the near east and near west sides of town.
We will feel the ground shaking at Edgewater with the sway of reggae, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens will rattle with percussion, and the Rock Hall is on fire with a Fam Jam, a call for your home movies and a new exhibit on one of the biggest series of rock concerts ever. And The Cleveland Orchestra offers a free concert on Wade Oval. That should raise our spirits.
Look out Taco Tuesday! Mushrooms have grown in popularity with chefs everywhere, and that includes Cleveland. In collaboration with Cleveland area chefs and the Mushroom Council, Cleveland Indpendents is launching Mushroom Monday.
Chef Daikel Holton, executive chef at Blue Canyon Kitchen & Tavern in Twinsburg, Ohio, has found great success in adding mushrooms to his menu, including a Mushroom and Fontina Ravioli with Basil Pesto Cream that is included in the new Mushroom Monday recipe book published by Cleveland Independents.

This weekend the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque officially passes the torch when its new director Bilgesu Sisman screens one of her favorite movies, the 1983 French film Sans Soleil, and answers audience questions afterwards. It’s her first selection as director. On the following night, retiring director John Ewing, who led the organization since its founding 38 years ago, will screen three of his favorite movies, along with three shorts he made in college. And down in Akron, the Cinematheque’s younger sibling, Nightlight Cinema, will celebrate its tenth anniversary with two days of special programming, including newly restored films, debuts and shorts by local filmmakers, as well as an open house with tours of their new space prior to their second screen expansion. Former CoolCleveland correspondent writer Jennifer Boresz Engelking has teamed up with Cleveland designer Anne Johnson, founder of the Cleveland fashion brand Anne Cate. The two Lake County natives have launched a beach bag bundle in promotion with Jennifer’s latest book, Lost Lake Erie. The book explores the lost businesses of Lake Erie, in a time when the Great Lakes were surrounded by industry. The beach bag displays cities and islands around Lake Erie, inspired by a map featured in the book. Read more.
Once again the Rock Hall will be hosting a home movie night in November, and once again the Rock Hall Library and Archives is looking for submissions from you, the public.
