The Juneteenth celebration at the African-American Cultural Garden is more intimate and laidback than the big Freedom Fest downtown and focused more on culture and history. It’s also on the actual holiday. It included a free meal for everyone, lots and lots of firewater (it was in the 90s), vendors, games and activities for kids, food trucks for additional eating choices, a kids’ reenactment of the first Juneteenth, and a talent competition featuring seven acts ranging from little kids reciting and dancing to teens belting out songs, all so good that the judges came as close as they could to declaring it a tie.
