The trolley level of the Detroit Superior Bridge is a magical place to the many Clevelanders who have been there – and many who have only heard about it. The two Ingenuity fests that took place there in 2010 and 2011 were most people’s favorites and the 2019 installation by Squidsoup in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Cuyahoga River fire inspired countless selfies. Periodically (such as now) conversations start about making use of the space abandoned by trollers in 1954, with ideas ranging from more art to recreational sports to shops.

The weekend of Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22, the space was activated once again by a team of installation artists, performers and musicians led by All Go Signs’ Chuck Karnak. Lights changed colors, illuminating umbrellas and cloth banners while musicians played at various intervals on the bridge and dancers and performance artists made their way across different spaces. People of all ages (and their dogs) thronged the bridge, demonstrating that there’s a hunger out there for the bridge’s lower level to come alive more often.
