Fulfillment

03.02-03.09.22

It’s time to fulfill our destiny.
It looks to be a monumental week. With the large Ukrainian population in the Cleveland area, the Happy Dog Takes on the World series turns things over to a panel of Ukrainian Americans to offer some context and discussion of the tumultuous events on the world stage. And speaking of rocking the world, Akron’s EarthQuaker Devices has been supplying musicians with effects pedals internationally for years, and this week collaborates with the Akron Symphony Orchestra on a program called Earthquaker Symphony.

Seoul-born Korean-American artist Aram Han Sifuentes kicks off a program to engage visitors and viewers in a conversation about community, culture and immigration at moCa Cleveland called, Who Was This Built to Protect? And there’s a lot more going on this week. It feels like it’s time to rise up.

 FORUM

Happy Dog Takes on Ukraine

The long-running Happy Dog Takes on the World series, held in conjunction with the City Club, has returned recently, filling the Gordon Square club with lively, informal discussions about world affairs. This month’s discussion should be one of its timeliest and most passionate yet, as Happy Dog Takes on Ukraine. It will feature a panel of Ukrainian Americans with connections to the old country who’ll talk about the background of the current conflict with Russia: how Ukraine has struggled to establish a democracy in the shadow of an autocracy whose leader, Vladimir Putin, has a stake in damaging democracies at his doorstep — and around the world — and how all that impacts the U.S.

Panelists include Taras Szmagala, chairman/president of the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, and Peter Teluk, Squire Patton Boggs, Kyiv Ukraine and Advisor to Minister of Economy. Cleveland-Marshall College of Law professor Milena Sterio moderates. The forum is free and open to all.  Read More

 MUSIC

A Symphonic EarthQuake

A few years ago, the Akron Symphony’s music director reached out to another Akron institution, EarthQuaker Devices, which makes effects pedals played by rock musicians around the world, to propose an idea: what would happen if you combined acoustic orchestral instruments with electronic effects devices?

The audience at ASO’s concert this Sat 3/5 will find out at a program called “Earthquaker Symphony,” featuring works by Beethoven, Haydn and Dawson, plus a new commissioned work, Confluence: Symphony for Orchestra & Effects, by Sonnenberg/Walsh, that incorporates an array of EarthQuaker Devices’ sound processors.  Read More
