The Jazz Gallery was founded in New York City in 1995 by the late trumpeter Roy Hargrove and his late manager Dale Fitzgerald, along with jazz vocalist Lezlie Harrison. In its 25+ years, several generations of the most talented jazz player have trooped onto its stage.
In 2010, for its 15th anniversary it sponsored the Jazz Gallery All-Stars, featuring some of the younger future jazz stars. It did so again in 2020 with an ensemble of young musicians and composers including alto sax player Miguel Zenón (who was part of the 2010 group as well), tenor sax player Melissa Aldana, vibraphone player Joel Ross, guitarist Charles Altura, pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Linda May Han Oh, drummer Kendrick Scott and special guest vocalist Renee Neufville.
The group was scheduled to perform at Tri-C Mwtro Auditorium in early February, a show which got postponed. But they’re coming now Zenón, Ross, Altura and Scott are still part of the group. The lineup coming to town also includes pianist Aaron Parks, upright bassist Matt Brewer and vocalist Sachal Vasandani. Tickets are $25; free parking is available immediately under the auditorium. Masks are required on campus!
