Classic guitarists Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett both graduated from the Yale School of Music. But instead of launching solo careers, they combined talents to form Duo Noire, a “virtuosic pair,” focused on performing what they call “audience-friendly” contemporary music that blends influences of other genres into a classical setting.
Their first salvo was 2014’s FIGMENTS, a recording featuring Juilliard professor Raymond Lustig’s 30-minute composition written for the duo. They continued to build their reputation with 2018’s Night Triptych, the full-length debut, featuring pieces written for Duo Noire by women composers. And they played the world premiere of a piece by another woman composer, Haitian-American Nathalie Joachim, and performing at piece by Flippin, called A Dark Winter in a Lost Year, at Severance Hall with members of the Cleveland Orchestra
They’ll be performing at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights for the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society. Get tickets and more information here.
