Quire Cleveland, Northeast Ohio’s professional choral group, is back with another live concert, tied into the season of Lent, called “Bohemian Treasure: Demantius’ St. John Passion.”
It’s a tradition among choral groups around the world to program one of J.S. Bach’s Passion settings during this season. Because their main focus in Renaissance music, Quire Cleveland will be performing a 17th-century setting with the music of Bohemian composer Christoph Demantius (1567-1643). Along with the St. John Passion, they’ll be singing Demantius’ piece based on the prophet Isaiah’s words on Christ’s death, two motet settings of St. John by Demantius and chorales from Bach’s St. John Passion.
They’ll perform at three Cleveland area churches of different ethnic backgrounds St. John Cantius Polish church in Tremont on Friday, St. Vitus Slovenian Church in the St. Clair/Superior neighborhood on Saturday and St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church on Buckeye on Sunday.
Admission is free and no tickets or reservations are required for open seating. A freewill donation will be taken. Masks are required.
