Artists & Arts Supporters Come Together to Advocate for Funding

There’s a new organization in town called the Assembly for the Arts, a nonprofit formed last year by various community stakeholders to advocate for the arts in Greater Cleveland.

Right now, one of its main projects is to lobby for $10 million of the $500 million coming to Cleveland from the American Rescue Plan Act be allocated to the arts sector, an area that employs, directly or indirectly, almost 20,000 people in the city of Cleveland alone and generates billions in economic activity. Yet it was one of the hardest-hit by the pandemic, forced to shut down for the longest period of time. Mayor Justin Bibb has said he supports this funding.

But they’re not taking anything for granted. The Assembly for the Arts has created 18 postcards, featuring artists of all types in all of Cleveland’s wards. And they’re hosting postcard parties to write messages to city council members. You can join them at Sankofa Fine Arts at 11501 St. Clair this Thursday March 3 @ 4-6pm. It’s a great chance to meet other artists and arts supporters as well.
