David Bowie Weekend Arrives January 2019 at BOP STOP

Ever get the feeling that some of your favorite Bowie songs are NOT his hits? Then you’ll love our new show, David Bowie’s Deep Cuts: Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, focusing on overlooked classics, epic suites too long for radio, and delicious gems that languished as deep album tracks if they were released at all. The show is on Sat 1/12 at the acoustically excellent BOP STOP.

But to hear all the inside stories about this groundbreaking artist’s entire life and artistic output from birth to Blackstar, you should also be there the night before, Fri 1/11, for An Evening With(out) David Bowie, updated with newly released box sets and rarities.

Both nights feature rare video, hi-def audio, trivia and giveaways presented and directed by Thomas Mulready. And each evening is capped with a sizzling live music set by Cleveland glam punk superstars Vanity Crash. Get your tickets early, as these shows tend to sell out. Be there to help us create a little maelstrom of our own.

Breaking Boundaries

Maelstrom Collaborative Arts launched in 2006 as Theatre Ninjas, an adventurous, nomadic ensemble that made creative use of different spaces. As time passed, their presentations strayed more and more from the bounds of traditional theater.

Settling into a permanent home last year gave the group even more room to experiment and explore. That resulted in collaborations with artists in other disciplines including music, dance and visual arts, as well as breaking away from traditional theater-type scheduling of events. On Sat 12/1, they’ll host their season announcement party “Saturnalia.” Expect the unexpected.

A Little Boost

A few years ago Cleveland musician John Panza had an idea. He saw foundations helping various types of artists but not indie rockers. So he started the Panza Foundation to do just that. It’s about to announce its fifth group of recipients at an event at the Happy Dog where last year’s beneficiaries will play.

The board selects four bands each year based on their own knowledge of the scene – you can’t apply. They’re looking mostly for mid-career artists who want to take on a project to get them up another rung on the ladder. “For us, the measure of success for the bands we sponsor is, do they keep playing, do they still enjoy it and are they still able to get out there?” says Panza. The Worth (lessness) of Women

Recently, Clevelanders have grieved the loss of several beloved and valuable women at the hands of men who acted on the belief that if a woman did not do what he wanted, it was his right to decide whether she lived or died. About half of all murders of women were at the hands of a domestic partner, present or former. Even men with tenuous relationships with a woman feel this right to decide her fatal fate.

There’s a strong connection with lawmakers who propose laws governing women’s bodies, such as the Ohio legislature’s renewed effort to pass the abortion-banning “Heartbeat” bill, as well as the belittling of claims of sexual harassment and assault, whether against Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh or former Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster William Preucil. It’s all part of a mentality that says men are the masters of women’s bodies. It’s an attitude that has to change.

Come Light the Menorah!

It’s the first night of Chanukah, so the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage invites families and others to come for a free candle-lighting ceremony, storytelling, holiday crafting, game playing and the chance to tour its special exhibit, Israel: Then & Now. Wed 12/5.

* Barberton’s Magical Theatre Company presents a Christmas-themed premiere production, Prancer, in which a little girl find an injured reindeer she believes is one of Santa’s team. Fri 11/30-Sun 12/16.

Astoria Cafe & Market cheesemonger Tom Leguard will be cracking an 80-pound wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and offering samples, along with wine. Of course he’s tempting you to buy their Mediterranean-sourced goodies, but you would have anyway, right? Sat 12/1.

* The Cleveland Vegan Society’s VegFest gets bigger every year and it’s still free. To fund it, they’re throwing a Winter Wine Fest at CLE Urban Winery with music, dancing, drinking, a silent auction, and, yes, vegan food. Sat 12/1.

* Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market wound down in October, but the vendors are back for one winter market (indoors!) to give their patrons a chance to shop for the holidays. Sun 12/2.

The Ingenuity Festival is no longer a once-a-year thing. With its permanent space at the Hamilton Collaborative, it’s able to host year-round events like its Ignite! Speaker Series. Tonight two speakers talk about building a business in your community.

Literary Cleveland’s Gordon Square Review online journal for emerging writers marches proudly into its third edition. A launch party tonight at the Happy Dog features readings by the writers chosen for this issue.
