It’s become a tradition at Trinity Cathedral to devote an early December edition of their Brown Bag concert series to Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols.
The 12-part song cycle, which the British composer wrote in 1942, is based on medieval carols in archaic English with flourishes of Latin, written for female (or children’s) voices and harp. Opening and closing and wrapping up with the plainchant-style “Hodie,” it wends its way through tunes like the bright “Wolcom Yole!” and loving tributes to Christ’s mother, “There Is No Rose” and “As Dew in Aprille.”
The performance features the sopranos and altos of the Trinity Cathedral Choir with harpist Jody Guinn providing the accompaniment.
It’s part of the free weekly Brownbag concerts series. Bring your lunch or buy one at the Cathedral for $7. In addition, there will be a pop-up art show featuring work by landscape artist John Davis.
