Once again, the North Union Farmers Market is hosting its large-scale reminder that you have to plant your garlic in the fall! (I keep forgetting because it goes in the ground in October, when typically you aren’t planting anything new.)
The reminder is its annual Garlic Festival at Shaker Square where you can pick up your seed garlic from a number of vendors who specialize in raising garlic for planting — in a dizzying array of varieties from mild to spicy. The festival also features food (much of it made with garlic, some not), Mitchell’s garlic ice cream which once again this year I will not be trying, craft beer, chef grill-offs, live music and an area of kids’ activities with a flower clown, an inflatable obstacle course, a petting zoo, and of course face painting, required by law at kid-friendly events.
And the ticket money supports the mission of the non-profit North Union markets, which run two year-round markets in Shaker Square/Shaker Heights and Crocker Park, and several satellite summer markets.
