The Black Arts Expo, hosted by Glenville nonprofit Sankofa Fine Arts Plus ran for many years before it stopped 15 years ago. But it returned to the schedule this year, with a three-day run at Shaker Square. Originally planned to take place under a large tent on Shaker Square, rain changed the plans, and the organizers, led by Sankofa’s leader Robin Robinson, quick punted, finding indoor spaces in an empty storefront and a photography studio where art was displayed, artists did talks, and creators hosted vendor tables where they displayed and sold paintings, printing, clothing, books and more. Visitors could also listen to music created by local musicians at the cassette listening station where you could borrow a headset and walk around with a soundtrack to the art. Plans are for the event to continue.
