Akron was one of Ohio’s last large cities to host a Pride celebration when it launched with modest ambitions in 2017 in a local park. It was planning for a casual get-together of maybe 1,000 people — 7,000 shows up.
Since then Akron Pride Festival has moved to downtown Akron where it hosts its “Equity March” that ends up at downtown Akron’s big festival spot, Lock 3, for a full day of activities. The theme of this year’s event is “Common Ground” and it focuses on “intersectionality,” which in simple terms is the idea that discrimination against one group affects others too: that the tsunami of baseless attacks on transgender people, for instance, can impact the human rights of women, people of color, and even gay white men.
The march steps off at 10am at the Spaghetti Warehouse at 510 S. Main Street for the 6/10 of a mile walk to the festival site where activities take place through 10pm. It’s free and of course open to ALL.
