While this year’s Wade Oval Wednesday was beset by cancellations due to weather (storms, excessive heat), it finished its 2026 run on a high note with crowd-rousing New Orleans-style brass-and-percussion ensemble Da Land Brass Band. According to band cofounder/trombone player Dr. William Washington, they’d been angled for the gig for several years. It’s hard to believe they won’t be back, as they get a party started like almost no other current Cleveland band with their lineup of six exuberant horn players and two drummers, and loads of crowd-pleasing antics. From little kids dancing with their siblings to elders in wheelchairs, everyone was entertained.
The finale included also included a funky jazz opening group Nasir Wilson & the Afrofunk Revolution, the usual between-set line dancing, and plenty of hula hoops to keep both children and adults wiggling their hips.
