Ever since Shontel Brown was elected to represent Ohio-11 in Congress last November, replacing Marcia Fudge who was appointed to President Biden’s cabinet, she’s dug into the job with gusto and success, working hard to write and co-sponsor legislation to help “the least of these,” building relationships in Congress, and maintaining strong ties to people and organizations across the district. She’s ranked the 11th most progressive congressperson.She faces a pointless primary challenge on Tuesday May 3. Few new congresspeople have been as effective and hard-working as she has. Alex Lee is a Chinese student who spoke out during the protests in Hong Kong as China imposed anti-democratic measures, suppressed free speech, and arrested dissidents.Now Alex is biking through Cleveland on his way from Los Angeles to Boston to raise awareness and continue speaking out.
CoolCleveland caught up with Alex on Zoom and he described for us the harrowing conditions in Hong Kong, the rigors of his cross-country bike ride and his near-death experience in North Dakota when he was run over by a drunk driver, severing his aorta and losing his spleen and a tooth. Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Pinkey S. Carr’s lawyer, Nicholas E. Froning, argued that if the 24 month suspension is imposed, 18 months should be stayed by the court which would mean that Carr would only lose six months of her salary and would be eligible to seek re-election.By way of mitigation, and in hopes of getting a lighter sentence, Froning argued that a major contributing factor to Carr’s conduct was the fact that she was suffering from the effects of menopause and sleep apnea.
