Robin VanLear’s work is widely known in Cleveland. She was the founder of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s signature Parade the Circle festival, working with teams of community artists to create its signature giant puppets and other colorful outsized figures. (She also created the Chalk Fest and Lantern fests during her tenure at CMA.)
Since leaving CMA and starting her own independent creative practice, her recognizable figures have enhanced events such as Tri-C JazzFest and Cleveland Public Theatre’s Dia de Muertos. Last year, VanLear was part of CPT’s SoftLaunch performance/art festival to work on new presentations in development. As part of that program, she devised Hallowed Owls (…because everything begins and ends in winter), an interactive installation that combines storytelling, poetry, voice, instrumentals and dance to reveal the mysterious world of owls and the mythologies create around them.
