The Rocky River Chamber Music Society, which livens up Monday evenings with free concerts by world-class chamber music ensembles, kicks off its 68th (!!!) season this week. And they’re dedicating the opening concert to America’s 250thanniversary with music by American composers such as 20th century composers Samuel Barber and Charles Ives, and contemporary composer Caroline Shaw, as well as spirituals arranged for voice and string quartet.
They’ll be performed by the Ciompi String Quartet, founded at Duke University in 1965, and named after a Florentine violinist who headed the violin department at the Cleveland institute of Music for a decade (1954-64) before moving to Duke where he founded the quintet and served as its first violin from 1965-1983. The group’s members are all music professors at Duke and perform regularly on campus including in dorms and classrooms, but they also tour extensively around the world.
They’ll be joined for this concert by baritone Robert Sims, known for his renditions of spirituals and African-American folk songs. He is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory.
The concert, taking place at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, is free and open to all.
