The next show at Abattoir Gallery at the Hildebrandt Provisions Building features work by Cleveland-based Jen P. Harris.
Thrum, their first solo exhibition at Abattoir, features a group of “loom paintings,” “described as “hybrid paintings on panel and canvas which themselves become looms; structures for the weaving that sits on top of the painted surface.” These paintings, they say, “collapse distinctions between mediums, holding them in tension. In so doing, the work resists fixed interpretation, privileging ambiguity as both a visual and philosophical condition.” That tension is the “thrum.”
Curator Sam Adams has written an essay about the how which will be published as a booklet, looking at the connections between abstract painting and textile work and fitting Harris’s work into those dual mediums. The show opens with a free, public reception on May 1 and will be on view through June 20.
