Onstage

06.15-06.22.22

Push your way to the front.
Juneteenth is enjoying center stage, celebrated everywhere from Coventry Village’s re-born Street Fair, to a Black queer liberation festival in Asiatown, to the Rock Hall’s showcasing of Black culture, music and artists, to the community-wide, all-day, family-friendly Freedom Festival on Mall C.The City Club takes their public forum to Public Square with a series of free outdoor talks; the first features Policy Matters Ohio, a nonprofit progressive think tank focused on common-sense issues such as job and wage growth, workers’ rights, education equity, justice reform and access to health care.

And Hilary Gent, who’s always promoting the best regional artists at her HEDGE Gallery at 78th Street Studios, steps into the spotlight and discusses her own art work at an artist talk.

Finally, it’s time to Crash. Local heroes Vanity Crash take to the stage next week to reveal some exciting new music and a bit of their soul, plus everyone walks out with a free download. Stage time!

 KIDS

Chagall for Children at The Maltz

Not only was Marc Chagall one of the most influential surrealists and leading Jewish artists of the 20th Century, he worked in a dizzying array of media and broke all the rules of art: gravity, physics, color, meaning, all were fair game for Chagall’s vivid imagination. In other words, he’s the perfect artist to introduce young people to art and culture, as kids are breaking the rules all the time.

The exhibition Chagall for Children employs 14 multi-sensory exploration stations for kids and their families to touch, engage and experience original artworks of Chagall and learn about composition, color, light, science, culture and creativity. Dahlia Fisher of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage tells us about the numerous hands-on activities scheduled throughout the summer.  Read more.

 COMMENTARY

Our Local Democratic Party
Is at a Crossroads

For decades, Ohio has been considered a solid swing state; but that has changed. And the numbers speak: only 18% of voters even voted in the most recent primary; 11% turnout in the City of Cleveland. If Democrats hope to push back, they need to run out the vote in Cuyahoga and the other urban counties in the state.

With the looming off-year election that includes all statewide offices and most importantly, a seat in the United States Senate, Democrats cannot rest on their laurels. Register for the Zoom on on Wed 06.15 at 8PM, where each of the five candidates (pictured above) for Chair of the Cuyahoga Democratic Party will share their vision and answer questions submitted by participants. Read more.

 REMEMBRANCE

A Father’s Day Tribute

Every year, starting in 2005. the late CoolCleveland columnist Mansfield Frazier began publishing this story about his father every Father’s Day. After that, each year he would go over the piece and make whatever changes he felt were warranted.

This is the 2021 edition, his final edit. But his story of growing up in the Central neighborhood and how his father showed him by his own behavior what it meant to be a man is worth another read. Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 19. Read more
