There’s something about the Americana/alt-country genre that makes it a natural fit for husband-and-wife teams. It lends itself to the simplicity and intimacy of two musicians sharing a stage.
North Carolina’s Chatham Rabbits — Sarah and Austin McCombie — are a new ensemble in this genre. They’re very prolific, having released their debut album All I Want From You in 2019, followed by The Yoke Is Easy, the Burden Is Fullthe following year and now If You See me Riding By this month. With Sarah on clawhammer-style banjo and Austin on guitar, and both blending their voices in harmony, the two play music steeped in old-time/bluegrass sounds as well more modern roots genres. You can get a taste of their music in a show taped for PBS NC called On the Road with Chatham Rabbits, which you can watch here.
While the duo spent 2020-2021 on their virtual “Stay at Home Tour,” offering their music in almost 200 different locales. But this is their first opportunity to tour widely in person. They’ve got two dates in this area: at Lorain County’s Riverdog Barn on Thursday June 16 and at the G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula on Friday June 17.
