Gospel Meets Symphony Concert Takes Place After Four-Month Delay

Sat 6/18 @ 7:30PM

One of the annual highlights of the Akron Symphony season is its Gospel Meets Symphony concert generally held in February.

So this February there was a surge in COVID infections and a lot of schedules got changed on the fly including this concert, which was pushed back into June, where it concludes ASO’s indoor season (The orchestra plays outdoors in various parks during the summer.)

As usual, the orchestra is joined by the Gospel Meets Symphony Choir, made up of members of church choirs from across the city. It even includes a junior gospel choir called GMS 2.0 Choir. The program for the evening features gospel- and spiritual-based music, honoring musical traditions of the Black church.

ASO music director Christopher Wilkins conducts the orchestra while choirmaster Jonathon Turner has been getting the singers in shape. The concert takes place at the University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall. Get tickets here. Previously purchased tickets will be honored.
