Fizz & Flash

02.17-02.24.21

There’s a thaw coming. But only after this deep freeze.

Meanwhile, we count our blessings and we count the days. On a good day, we’re lucky to see the sun flashing off the frozen ice. And we celebrate together as Oberlin presents five black composers, the Rock Hall screens the film Mr. SOUL!, DANCECleveland presents Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, Kink Contemporary shows the work of queer artists, and local leaders share justice initiatives at a City Club forum.Speaking of justice, the queen of them all, the Notorious RBG, is honored in a major new exhibition at the Maltz. Fizz is the theme of the final week of the Akron Art Museum’s Midnight Blues. You can enter the TwiBrite Zone with Brite Winter and experience homecoming.

Voter turnout in the recent election was the highest in 120 years, and (news flash!) it turns out voters wanted a change. But with one party receiving only 52% of the vote in Ohio while claiming 75% of the congressional seats, the redistricting happening next year, along with a new law, means we have a chance to make our elections more representative. Check out the ridiculously gerrymandered Ohio congressional map below, and stay in touch with the group All On The Line Ohio to keep the pressure on our legislators. It may not be flashy, but just like the last election, it works.  –Thomas Mulready

 HISTORY
An Influential Life

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, dubbed “The Notorious RBG” (a play on rapper Notorious B.I.G.), became a cultural icon as well as an influential civil rights advocate and liberal lion of the U.S. Supreme Court. When she died in September, it was a political earthquake. Now the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is opening an exhibit that reflects on her life and legacy as a person, a lawyer and a judge. Read More

 REDISTRICTING
It’s All On The Line

Ohio has among the most lopsided congressional districts in the country, with Republicans getting 52% of the vote and 75% of the seats. But with a redistricting measure passed in 2018, we’ve got a shot at fairer districts for 2022, with new maps being drawn later this year. Stay in touch with the organization All On The Line Ohio to stay informed and learn how to pressure legislators to do the right thing. Read More
