Artists Archives Biennial Show NewNow Opens in Virtual Gallery

Wed 2/17-Sat 4/17

Thu 2/18 @ 7-8PM

Every other year, the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve and Cuyahoga Community College present NewNow, a juried biennial show for regional artists. Usually it hangs in Tri-C East’s Gallery, which is currently closed.

But NewNow21 is going on as scheduled. It’s just only online this year. Juror Cat Sheridan, who is curator of the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery in Columbus, chose the work of 63 artists for the show whose work, the promotion says, “speaks to the upheaval of the previous year and the frenetic energy propelling us toward the future” and“more than ever, takes the pulse of the current artistic climate, and reflects the experience of living in Northeast Ohio during this tumultuous moment in time.”

Says Sheridan, “I hope that the NewNow exemplifies for the viewer (as it does for me) the liminal truth of the year: We find ourselves placed squarely at the nexus of change, acutely aware that we are experiencing history. Deep emotions have shaken off their apathy and pulse forward into focus with urgency, as seen in these works through themes of representation, equity, social justice, climate change, the global pandemic, displacement, isolation, and meditation.”

NewNow2021 features a variety of media including painting, ceramics, photography and mixed-media works, displayed in a digital gallery, along with artist biographies and headshots, as well as links to their own sites.

There’s a free virtual opening reception and awards ceremony on Thursday February 18 @ 7-8pm on Zoom. Five awards will be announced and Sheridan will speak, along with Gallery East Director Blake Cook, Gallery East Coordinator Terri Patton and AAWR Executive Director Mindy Tousley. Register at artistsarchives.org.
