Akron Soul Train is an organization that provides short “residencies” to (mostly) area artists to develop a project that then gets an exhibit and/or performances in its downtown Akron gallery.
For the next month and a half, two of its summer artists will be showing their work in an exhibit called Divergent Deliveries, described as a show which “contrasts digital usefulness with handcrafted outcomes.”
Shaker Heights resident Seth Nagelberg, Chair of Ceramics at the Cleveland Institute, says, “I choose materials for their properties, so it is not unusual to find myself working in ceramic, wood, glass or metal. By exploring these properties, I strive to create new ways of working with a material, coaxing it to do something new.” His work emanates from cutting and folding paper to see what emerges.
Multimedia artist Justin Sorensen is interested in science and travel, but like Nagelberg’s, his work has playful qualities. His installation, On Exactitude in Science, was created by flying graphite-coated paper airplanes into the gallery walls, then indicating each landing with a red flag to create a visual map. His contribution also includes a set of graphite drawings based on his Google algorithms produced by his search for “Jack.”
The exhibit opens Wednesday March 17 and will be on view through Saturday March 20. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday @ 11am-4pm.
