Cleveland-raised jazz trumpet player Dominick Farinacci, who cut his teeth in the Tri-C Jazz Allstars program, has gone on to have an international career in music. But he often returns to his hometown for concerts and projects. One of those was Modern Warrior LIVE, which he co-created with Army veteran Jaymes Poling, based on the mental health issues faced by veterans returning from combat. It toured around the U.S. and had frequent performances in Northeast Ohio.
Now Farinacci and Poling have created another production called Behind the Lines: A 9/11 Story which is coming to Playhouse Square this week. Poling’s stories were combined with those of New York firefighter Bill Spade, the only survivor of the company that responded to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Their stories are enhanced by the performance of a cast of outstanding musicians led by Farinacci. “The production reveals a profound bond forged through courage, sacrifice, and resilience, illuminating the enduring strength of the human spirit,” says the production’s promotion.
The piece, directed by Emmett Murphy, was recently performed at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in NYC, and will be going on a 15-city national tour following the Cleveland performance.
“Bringing authentic stories and extraordinary musicians together create a special and unique way to experience history,” says Farinacci in the press release. “Twenty-five years after September 11, it is important to honor those lost, and to use this historic moment to spark a larger, sustained conversation about the strength and resilience of first responders, service members and their families.”
