Relic is a period chamber orchestra that reinvents the presentation of Baroque music, shaping both familiar and obscure pieces from the era into “chapters” that tell stories.
It’s bringing one of those narrative performances, titled “The Blood of the Rose,” to the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium. It tells the ill-fated love story of Venus and Adonis, focusing primarily on Spanish and Latin American Baroque music by composers such as Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, Roque Jacinto de Chavarría, Juan de Araujo, George Frideric Handel, John Blow, Alessandro Scarlatti, and more. A dozen musicians will perform the program.
The program takes its name from Torrejón y Velasco’s La Purpura de la Rosa (The Blood of the Rose), the first opera performed in the Americans (1701). Its libretto was written by Spanish poet Pedro Calderón de la Barra, and tells the Venus and Adonis story.
