The Julliard String Quartet, founded at one of America’s preeminent music conservatories in NYC in 1946, has a long and storis history as one of the great string quartets in the world. Obviously, it has none of its original members—it’s had 19 over the years. But it’s maintained its rigorous quality and remained the Juilliard School’s quartet-in-residence since its founding.
Its current members are all on Juilliard’s faculty, and in addition to teaching at the school, they offer classes and open rehearsals on the road, seeding he next generation of classical string players.
Like many contemporary string quartets, it has a broad repertoire of the classics, and also supports new works by contemporary composers. When it performs at Oberlin College and Conservatory’s Finney Chapel, the program will lean toward the former, with Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 16 in F Major and Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major. But many will be unfamiliar with Six moments musicaux, Op. 44 by 100-year-old (and still living!) Hungarian composer György Kurtág.
