The Suburban Symphony Orchestra, comprising 80 community musicians, is known for presenting crowd favorites, usually familiar works, in free concerts, mostly in Beachwood where it’s based. It’s been doing this for seven decades.
Its upcoming season theme is “Life Finds a Way,” with programs exploring hope, resilience and nature. And it opens this week with an unusual multi-media concert. The concert, called “Pines of Rome,” will featuresItalian composer Ottorino Respighi’s 1924, as well as American composer Mary Howe’s 1927 tone poem Stars, Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s 1903 Helios Overture, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring noted local pianist Joyce Yu.
But what really makes the concert unusual is its collaboration with the Cleveland Photographic Society, which will provide more than 100 images taken by local photographers, inspired by the music. Some will be projected above the orchestra while it plays while others will be displayed in a photo gallery in the lobby.
Music/Artistic Director Domenico Boyagian will lead the program, taking place at Beachwood High School. Doors open at 3pm to view the lobby photo display (it will also be available to view during intermission and after the concert), and the concert starts at 3:30. Admission is free.
