Roots of American Music’s Masters of American Music Series at Ohio City’s Visible Voice books is kicking off its new, earlier time lo (coinciding with the store’s café and being open throughout) with a program on one of America’s most legendary and influential folk singers, Woody Guthrie, whose anti-establishment songs are resonating even more during these current times. His best-known song, “This Land Is Your Land,” is not a patriotic song but a song of protest against exclusion.
The program couldn’t have a more appropriate host than ROAM’s Educational Program Director Charlie Mosbrook, noted local folksinger, open mic organizer, and winner of the 2019 Woody Guthrie Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. He’ll share how Guthrie channeled his ordinary life into extraordinary songs that captured the struggles, joy and dreams of every-day working people, and how he forged a path that many others have followed.
Mosbrook has a deep connection to Guthrie’s music himself. He’s led workshops on it across the country, performed as part of the Rock Hall’s 1996 tribute to Guthrie, Hard Travellin’, performed Guthrie’s material alongside his own, and released an album of Guthrie songs this summer called There Is a Better World Coming. He’s also an activist both in the music and political communities, and an advocate for social justice — carrying on Guthrie’s work.
